AlertBox comes to Bristol.
In the south west, it is the first pilot of its type and
after a successful trial in Henbury, it is hoped that
the scheme maybe extended into other areas in
Bristol.
The AlertBox system creates a digital network, linking box owners, ensuring
speedy communication and greater security in the event of any criminal or
other suspicious activity. It has been successfully trialled in London. Crow
Lane has been selected for the trial.

networks in the shopping parades of their borough for the benefit of traders and shoppers.
The AlertBox systems enable traders to talk to each other at the touch of a button and are used for
the montitoring and warning of potential shoplifters and crooks.

New tool gathers vital data from networks.
Officials working in crime and disorder reduction can now administer and
monitor their AlertBox networks.
AlertBox Ltd has developed new software which enables them to analyse
activities within each local network.
Data can be downloaded from individual AlertBox units and collated to
provide key statistics. The data includes:
- Hot-spot analysis
- Nature-of-alert analysis
- Time/frequency analysis
This information will provide a statistical basis for detailed analysis
of trends. The result: more effective deployment of crime-reduction resources.
Officials can also broadcast non-urgent messages to all members of their
network by email, SMS or fax. They can use this facility to send advisory
and community-interest messages, and to request information on specific
community issues.

Successful AlertBox evaluation by Southwark Council.
Following successful evaluation by Southwark Council in London in October
(see story below, Oct 04), two AlertBox networks have been set up, one
for residents in Caroline Gardens and the other for traders in Peckham Rye.
The police have identified crime hotspots and deprived areas in other parts
of the Borough of Southwark - East Peckham and Nunhead - in which another
200-300 traders are shortly to be added to the network.

AlertBox network trials successful in south London
Southwark Council in London has completed a successful evaluation of an AlertBox Network in three areas
of Peckham town centre. The local traders’ business group, the Peckham Town Centre Management Group (PTCMG),
decided unanimously to endorse an AlertBox network project.
Peckham’s town centre is home to around 420 traders and three market areas. At a PTCMG meeting the principle
of employing an AlertBox network was endorsed by the Metropolitan Police Crime Prevention Officer and welcomed
by the traders who took part in the evaluation.

Traders in north London borough to get AlertBox network
London’s Enfield Business & Retailers' Association has bought 200 AlertBoxes to network traders in its borough.
Notably, the Enfield AlertBox network is the first where the local authority has diagnostic software. This software
will enable the authority to analyse statistics, and to identify crime and safety ‘hot-spots’, the nature of alerts
and peak alert times.
The result will be a more efficient deployment of crime-reduction resources. The initiative is seen as an important
step towards developing a BusinessWatch network and assisting urban regeneration.

'Electronic Neighbourhood Watch' - tackling fear of crime
A NEW, electronic version of the Neighbourhood Watch concept was praised by local authorities
and community safety groups around the country for successfully tackling crime and the fear of crime.
The AlertBox, which is about the size of a paperback book, uses a secure network of state-of-the-art
radio technology which allows neighbours to contact each other instantly via electronic messages.
The whole community can be warned of nuisance callers or suspicious persons at the touch of a single button.
The system also allows neighbours to call each other in the event of an emergency, such as fire or accident,
while they wait for the emergency services.
The system is already being trialled by a number of local authorities, including the London Borough of Barnet,
as well as Rhondda Cynon Taf Community Safety Partnership, which has provided AlertBoxes for a local primary
school, magistrates' courts and a doctor's surgery.
Peter Harris, Managing Director of AlertBox Ltd, said "AlertBox -like Neighbourhood Watch itself - is not an
alternative to the emergency services but it does offer a valuable back-up and peace of mind. Knowing that you
just have to press one button to alert your neighbours to a nuisance caller or to call for help, is something
that vulnerable people, such as the elderly or those who live alone, will really value."

Inventor's gadget box alerts neighbourhoods to criminals
You can usually tell when an area has suffered a spate of burglaries or car breakins.
The local pub is full of people going on about how this could not have
happened in the good old days.
But instead of getting beerily misty-eyed, one entrepreneur dreamed up a gizmo
he hopes will yoke people's community spirit in a way that can cut down both
fear of crime and crime itself.
Reading-based entrepreneur Peter Harris's AlertBox is a high-tech version of
Neighbourhood Watch that allows people instantly to alert those around them to

London Borough of Haringey
London Borough of Haringey has implemented phase one of its AlertBox
wireless network for the benefit of Tottenham traders around
Northumberland Park, Bruce Grove and West Green Road.
The council's forward thinking approach towards regenerating the
eastern part of the Borough is paying off as traders can now forewarn
others nearby in their workplace of any trouble. Effectively they now
have - an early warning system - which is a powerful tool to
deter crime and reassure members of the community.
