AlertBox is a wireless security device that enables immediate press-button
communication between neighbours. It is used to warn of suspicious activity,
antisocial behaviour or criminal acts. It may also be used to call for help in an
emergency. Each AlertBox functions as part of a local-area network of AlertBoxes.
Occupiers of houses, flats and bungalows in an urban or suburban setting will
benefit from ownership of a Neighbourhood Communicator. The elderly,
housebound and disabled, as well as families and the physically active, will enjoy
the advantages of AlertBox.
Business Communicator is of particular value to a wide range of businesses from
newsagents and betting shops to convenience stores and estate agents, typically
located in an urban or suburban street or shopping precinct.
There are two variants: Neighbourhood Communicator for use in homes, and
Business Communicator for use on business premises. The units are very similar
but each is adapted to the particular needs of the relative user group.
Contact your local organiser of Neighbourhood Watch organiser, or AlertBox Ltd,
to establish whether there is an existing network in your locality. If there is,
you will be automatically connected to the network once your AlertBox is set up.
If there is no network, you can get advice on setting one up - see the next question.
Any number from two to upwards.
Return the unit to us and we will re-programme your new contact details.
You do not need to make any other changes; if you move to a new locality,
your AlertBox will automatically detect and log on to a new network.
Using AlertBox
To send a warning to your neighbours, just press the orange button.
To send a request for help to your neighbours, just press the red button.
AlertBox employs AlertWaves, our proprietary digital wireless protocol.
A warning will sound, and the screen of your unit will display the name,
address and phone number of the person sending the message. The nature
of the alert or emergency will also be displayed if the sender has
included it.
Before delivery, we will programme your unit with your contact
details - name, address and telephone number.
Yes. An internal battery will automatically power AlertBox for 3 to 4 hours
if the unit is unplugged from the mains. However we recommend that it remains
plugged in to the mains for normal operation.
No. In an emergency your first action should be to dial 999. Note however that a
call to neighbours for help may well save valuable minutes before emergency
services arrive.
No. Unlike other security systems, AlertBox sends and receives messages only
within a local-area network of AlertBox owners. This prompts direct action by
those closest to you who are in a position to react most quickly. The result:
encouragement of self-help within the neighbourhood and a boost for community
morale.
About the AlertBox system
AlertBox is a compact unit, measuring only 11 cm by 19 cm by 5.5 cm. It is
attractively styled and will not look out of place in your home or business.
Setting up an AlertBox is simple. Just plug it in to an electrical socket
and switch on. An easy-to-follow guide to finding the best position for it
in your house or business is supplied by us. The unit is small enough to be
placed unobtrusively in your home or business. A bracket is supplied as
standard for optional wall mounting.
AlertBox will communicate with other AlertBoxes within a typical range of
100 metres, adequate for most urban and suburban localities. In addition,
receiving AlertBoxes will automatically relay messages to additional
AlertBoxes within range. A message will only be relayed once to avoid the
reception area from becoming too large for effective response by recipients.
(Note that operating range may vary slightly according to conditions. If,
when set up, your unit cannot obtain sufficient range in your location it
may be returned for a refund under our warranty scheme.)
AlertBox is powered by normal mains electricity. Power consumption is minimal.
AlertBox will continue to operate for 3 to 4 hours on its internal
battery. When mains power resumes, the battery will recharge automatically.
Just press the TEST button. The test function serves two purposes: to ensure
the unit is working correctly, and to search for other AlertBoxes in your
vicinity. (Pressing the test button does not send any messages.)
Before delivery, we will programme your unit with your contact
details - name, address and telephone number.
Your unit will log the timings and details of any alerts sent or received;
this information may greatly assist police should they wish to investigate
the event which led to the alert call.
For extremely accurate time keeping, AlertBox units automatically detect the
time signal from the atomic clock at Rugby.
AlertBox in your neighbourhood
Distinctive window stickers and street signs are available free from
AlertBox Ltd. They are an important deterrent to antisocial and criminal
behaviour.
A facility for operation of AlertBox in languages other than English is
currently under development. An AlertBox programmed in one language will
be able to communicate with AlertBoxes in the same network that are programmed
in other languages. This facility will greatly assist speakers of minority
languages within the community.
